Breed Information

The Flemish Giant is a very large breed of domestic rabbit that originated in the Flanders region of Belgium in the early 1900s. With weights ranging from 10 to 15 pounds on average, the Flemish Giant is considered one of the largest breeds of rabbit in the world. Despite its imposing size, this gentle giant has a very calm and docile temperament that makes it an excellent pet or show rabbit.

History

The exact origins of the Flemish Giant breed are unclear, but it is believed they descended from the Patagonian rabbit brought over to Europe from South America in the 1800s. These large rabbits were bred with local Flemish rabbits in Belgium to produce an even larger rabbit. The goal was to produce a meat rabbit with a higher yield of meat compared to smaller breeds. The first Flemish Giants were imported to America in the early 1900s and quickly became popular exhibition rabbits due to their massive size and unique appearance. The breed was officially recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) in 1915.

Appearance

The most distinguishing feature of the Flemish Giant is obviously its sheer size. A fully grown adult can weigh over 15 pounds, making it similar in size to some house cats! Beyond just being big, Flemish Giants have a semi-arched muscular body type with broad shoulders and hips. Their fur is glossy and dense, ranging in color from black, blue, fawn, light gray, sandy, steel gray, and white. Solid black and solid white Flemish Giants are the most common and preferred by exhibitors and breeders. They have a large head, erect ears about 6 inches long, and powerful muscular hind legs.

Temperament

Despite being one of the largest rabbit breeds, Flemish Giants have a reputation for having an extremely calm, friendly, and docile temperament. They are not easily frightened or stressed and are quite tolerant of loud noises, children, and handling. Their serene personality makes them a favorite house pet for many rabbit enthusiasts. Flemish Giants enjoy human interaction and generally have little aggressive or territorial behavior. They are an ideal breed for first-time or novice rabbit owners. Of course, every rabbit has its own unique personality, but this breed is known for being gentle and laidback overall.

Housing

Due to their large size, Flemish Giants need plenty of space to stretch out and move around comfortably. The minimum enclosure size recommended for a Flemish Giant is 6 to 7 feet long by 3 feet wide. The enclosure should be tall enough for the rabbit to stand fully upright on its hind legs without hitting its head. Wire bottom cages are not suitable, so the flooring should be solid. Flemish Giants can be litter box trained. A bonded pair or trio of rabbits can share an enclosure, but each rabbit should have at least 6 square feet of floor space. Outdoor housing in a securely fenced area is also suitable in mild weather.

Feeding

A high quality diet consisting primarily of grass hay, leafy greens, and limited pellet feed is required to keep a Flemish Giant healthy. Unlimited grass hay should be available at all times to provide the needed fiber and promote dental health through the chewing action. Timothy or orchard grass hay are excellent choices. Fresh vegetables should be fed daily – good options include romaine lettuce, kale, parsley, cilantro, broccoli, carrots, and celery. Pellets specifically formulated for adult rabbits are also fed in limited measured amounts daily. Avoiding obesity is critical in this breed, so calories should be monitored. Fresh clean water must always be available.

Grooming and Health

The Flemish Giant has a short, dense double coat that requires weekly brushing to remove loose hair and distribute skin oils. Their nails should be trimmed as needed, about once a month for most rabbits. Check inside the ears for wax buildup and debris. Dental health is very important, so provide chew toys and treats to grind down the constantly growing teeth. Unneutered males will often display hormonal behaviors like territorial marking by spraying urine. Spaying or neutering is recommended to improve temperament. Flemish Giants are predisposed to certain health issues like sore hocks, malocclusion of the teeth, and spinal curvature if they are overweight. With proper care, they typically enjoy a lifespan of 5 to 7 years.
