The Mini Lop is one of the most popular rabbit breeds kept as pets. They are known for their sweet temperament, cute lopped ears, and small size. Here is an overview of this adorable rabbit breed.
History
The Mini Lop breed was developed in Germany in the 1960s by breeding small specimens of the French Lop breed. The goal was to create a lop-eared rabbit that was smaller in size than the large French Lop. By selectively breeding the smallest French Lops over several generations, the Mini Lop breed was established.
The Mini Lop was recognized as a distinct breed in the late 1970s and made its way to the United States and other countries soon after. This breed quickly became a favorite due to its friendly personality in a compact size. Today, the Mini Lop is the third most registered rabbit breed in the United States.
Appearance
The most distinctive feature of the Mini Lop is of course their lopped ears, which hang down on either side of the head. The ideal length for a Mini Lop's ears is between 5.5 to 6.5 inches long. The ears should be wide at the base and nicely rounded at the tips.
Mini Lops are a small to medium sized rabbit, weighing 3 to 4.5 lbs when fully grown. They have compact, well-rounded bodies and short necks. The legs should be short and sturdy. The coat is dense, glossy, and medium in length.
Mini Lops come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Common coat colors include white, black, blue, chocolate, lilac, tortoiseshell, steel, broken marked, and more. No variety is rarer or more valuable than another when it comes to show standards.
Temperament
The gentle, playful personality of the Mini Lop is one of their most beloved traits. They tend to be very easy-going and docile as adults. Mini Lops are usually more active as babies and mellow out as they mature. They enjoy playing, exploring, and interacting with their owners.
Mini Lops tend to form very close bonds with their owners when given lots of attention. They will seek out petting, crave lap time, and follow their owners around. With proper handling from a young age, Mini Lops become very comfortable being held. Their sweet nature makes them a great rabbit breed for adults and children alike.
While Mini Lops are usually not aggressive, they can be a bit skittish if not socialized properly. Be sure to handle them frequently from a young age so they become comfortable around people. Some Mini Lops can be nippy, especially intact males. Spaying/neutering helps improve temperament.
Care Requirements
Despite their small size, Mini Lops require a fair amount of specialized care. Here are some key things to know about caring for this breed:

Showing Mini Lops
The Mini Lop breed standard allows for a wide variety of colors and patterns to be shown. The ideal Mini Lop will have a compact, muscular body of 3.5 to 4.5 lbs when fully grown. Their head should be bold and wide. Ears are judged based on size, thickness, and how evenly they hang on both sides.
Personality and temperament should be relaxed and gentle. Mini Lops should pose well on the show table and respond calmly to being handled by judges. There are many local and national Mini Lop specialty shows held across the United States.
House Rabbit Considerations
While bred for showing, many Mini Lops also excel as house rabbits. Their small size makes them well-suited to indoor living. As long as they have enough exercise space and bunny-proofing, Mini Lops enjoy exploring and playing indoors.
Houses with children or busy households may not be ideal for Mini Lops. They can startle easily from loud noises or being picked up unexpectedly. Supervision is always recommended when children interact with any rabbit.
