Breed Information

The Silver Fox is a relatively new breed of domestic rabbit that was developed in the United States in the 1920s. It gets its name from its striking silver and black fur which resembles that of a silver fox. The Silver Fox emerged as a cross between an American Chinchilla rabbit and a French Angora rabbit in order to produce a breed with the nice fur qualities of both.

Origins

The Silver Fox rabbit was developed by Walter B. Garland of Canton, Ohio in the 1920s. Garland was an experienced rabbit breeder who wanted to create a new breed with the fur qualities of the Chinchilla but in different color variations. He bred a male American Chinchilla with a French Angora doe and then bred their offspring back to each other over several generations. This led to the establishment of the Silver Fox as a distinct new breed by the late 1920s.

The breed was quickly adopted by other rabbit breeders and showed up at rabbit shows throughout the United States by the 1930s. The National Silver Fox Rabbit Club was created in 1941 to promote and develop the breed. Today, the Silver Fox remains a popular rabbit breed kept as pets and show animals. Its striking appearance makes it stand out at rabbit shows.

Appearance

The most distinctive feature of the Silver Fox is its dramatic coloration. The fur consists of bands of silver, black, and brown hairs. The silver bands are nearest the skin, the black bands in the middle, and the brown bands are on the very tips. This gives the rabbit an overall silvery appearance with a black sheen. The fur on the underside of the rabbit is a lighter silver-gray.

Silver Foxes have compact, muscular bodies weighing 7-10 lbs when fully grown. They have rounded heads and short, erect ears. The eyes are bold and bright. The rabbits have medium bone structure and short fur of rolled density. Show-quality Silver Foxes should conform closely to the breed ideal standards for body shape, fur quality, and coloration.

Temperament

Silver Fox rabbits tend to have gentle, calm temperaments. While personality can vary some between individual rabbits, Silver Foxes generally make good pets. They tolerate handling well and are not prone to skittishness or aggression. Their medium size and weight also makes them easy to handle.

As prey animals, rabbits do feel more comfortable when they have places to hide. Providing enclosed hides and tunnels for a Silver Fox pet to retreat to helps them feel secure. But overall, the calm temperament of the Silver Fox breed makes it an excellent choice for households with children. They also get along well with spayed/neutered cats and dogs when properly introduced.

Like any rabbit, Silver Foxes require socialization from a young age to become comfortable around people. Spending time holding and interacting with a young Silver Fox bunny will allow it to become a relaxed, friendly adult pet.

Care

Caring for a Silver Fox rabbit is similar to caring for any medium-sized domestic rabbit breed. Some important things to keep in mind are:

  • Housing – Silver Foxes need plenty of room to move around. A large hutch or cage is essential, preferably with an enclosed run attached so they can move freely. Rabbits should also have time outside their enclosure each day to exercise.

  • Litter Training – Rabbits can be litter trained to use a litter box with hay in it. This containing mess and eases cleaning.

  • Hay diet – Grass hay should make up the bulk of a Silver Fox's diet. Timothy or orchard grass hay provides needed fiber.

  • Vegetables – Leafy greens and vegetables should be given daily. Avoid high-sugar fruits.

  • Pellets – A small amount of rabbit pellets can supplement the hay and veggie diet. Avoid muesli-style food mixes.

  • Grooming – Silver Foxes require regular brushing to control loose fur and keep their coats looking healthy. Nails also need occasional trimming.

  • Veterinary care – Getting annual checkups with a rabbit-savvy vet helps keep Silver Foxes healthy. They also need regular vaccinations.

  • Social needs – Silver Foxes thrive on interaction and playtime outside their enclosure each day. Without enough attention and stimulation, they can become depressed or destructive.

  • Chew toys – Providing plenty of chew toys helps prevent destructive chewing behaviors.

With proper care in diet, housing, grooming, veterinary care, and attention, a Silver Fox rabbit can live 8-12 years. Their striking good looks and gentle personalities make them a lovely addition to many households. They can be loving pets with the right care from an owner willing to meet their needs.

Showing Silver Fox Rabbits

Silver Fox rabbits are most commonly bred and shown at rabbit shows throughout the United States and Canada. There are strict standards defining ideal characteristics for show rabbits set by the American Rabbit Breeders Association. Judges carefully inspect each rabbit for qualities like:

  • Body weight and shape

  • Fur quality, density, and length

  • Patterns of color in the fur

  • Clarity and boldness of silvering

  • Head shape and ear carriage

The condition of the coat is also important. The fur should be very clean, soft, and silky to the touch without any mats. Establishing a daily grooming routine is essential for a show rabbit coat.

At shows, Silver Fox rabbits are posed on a table for judging. The judge handles them extensively while evaluating their attributes. Personality and temperament are not judged, but the rabbit must remain calm on the table.

Success in rabbit shows requires excellent genetic stock and careful breeding. Breeders must patiently work towards the ideal standards. Shows allow them to demonstrate the quality of their breeding program. For Silver Fox breeders, the silver color variations are a particular point of pride.

Silver Fox rabbits generally reach show maturity between 6-8 months old. Young rabbits must be gently trained to behave appropriately during judging. Handling them frequently helps get them comfortable with people. Most rabbits enjoy showing when properly socialized. It provides extra stimulation and attention.

While show animals must adhere closely to breed standards, Silver Foxes with minor faults or pet-quality can still make wonderful pets. The temperament and care requirements remain the same.

Fur and Wool Uses

The Silver Fox was developed specifically for its high-quality fur. Both the fur and wool have long been used in the textile and apparel industries. The fur sheds out naturally as the rabbit molts based on the season. Collecting this shed fur does not harm the rabbit.

Silver Fox fur is valued for its bold color patterns and silky texture. It is used raw or dyed in a variety of handicrafts and textiles. The fur may be harvested by gently brushing or combing the rabbit. The wool is typically sheared twice per year.

Some specific uses for Silver Fox fur and wool include:

  • Knitting yarn – The fur/wool is spun into luxurious yarn for handknitting scarves, hats, sweaters, etc.

  • Needle felting – The fur is excellent for sculpting art pieces through needle felting.

  • Apparel trim – Fur strips add decorative touches to garment collars, hems or cuffs.

  • Craft supplies – Crafters value the beautiful Silver Fox fur for a range of handicrafts and hobbies.

  • Fly tying – The fur is prized by fly tiers for creating fishing flies. The sheen mimics fish scales.

  • Paint brushes – Softer fur hairs have long been used for artist brushes.

  • Felt – Wool from shearing makes durable, versatile felt.

  • spinning – The long wool can also be hand spun into yarn using spinning wheels or drop spindles.

Raising Silver Fox rabbits can produce a renewable supply of beautifully colored fur and wool over the rabbit's lifetime. The fur need not go to waste and can provide materials for creative hobbies or extra income. It allows rabbits like the Silver Fox to continue contributing to a crafting tradition that dates back centuries.

Breeding Silver Fox Rabbits

Breeding quality Silver Fox rabbits requires an eye for subtle characteristics that meet the breed standards. It takes patience and care to establish bloodlines exhibiting ideal fur, body shape, weight, and silvery color tones. Responsible breeding maintains the health and temperament of the rabbits.

To evaluate breeder stock, standard factors to look for include:

  • Proper weight at maturity – 7-10 lbs

  • Bright, bold eyes

  • Muscular, compact body shape

  • Short, dense fur of proper texture

  • Balance of color bands in fur

  • Ears carried erect

  • Overall condition and health

Rabbits should be at least 6 months old before breeding. Beginners should connect with an experienced Silver Fox breeder to mentor them in selecting breeder stock. Joining the National Silver Fox Rabbit Club also provides networking and education.

Breeding Tips:

  • Track pedigrees and characteristics in a breeding journal. Record offspring weights, colors, fur density, etc.

  • Choose rabbits from unrelated bloodlines to avoid inbreeding.

  • Breed the best stock to continually improve characteristics. Cull bucks and does that do not meet standards.

  • Give nursing does extra protein, calories, and calcium for litters. Provide nest boxes and high-quality nutrition.

  • Wean young rabbits around 8 weeks old. Assess offspring qualities and keep the best for future breeding.

With each generation, patient selective breeding can produce rabbits ever closer to the Silver Fox ideal. Shows provide feedback on how a breeding program is progressing. Successful show rabbits or 4H projects demonstrate improvement.

Breeding quality Silver Fox rabbits is rewarding but requires dedication. There is satisfaction in seeing years of effort result in beautiful Silver Foxes that make wonderful show rabbits and pets. They continue to win over fans with their shining silver coats.

In conclusion, the Silver Fox is admired as a strikingly beautiful rabbit breed. They have gentle personalities that help them thrive as pets, show rabbits, and fur/wool producers. Their bold glossy fur displays unmistakable color bands in shades of silver, black and brown, showcasing their unique heritage. Silver Fox enthusiasts appreciate both the rabbits’ good looks and good nature, helping the breed remain popular today. With proper care and housing, these rabbits can enjoy long and healthy lives while bringing their owners much joy. Their beautiful fur, handsome features, and mellow disposition keep the Silver Fox a beloved rabbit breed.
