Where the term Indian Giver came from

In this short post I wanted to tell you a cool fact I recently learned about the term “Indian Giver”.

Ok, so once upon a time there was a tribe of Indians living in the present day state of New Hampshire. The Indians lived all by themselves until the white men settled New England. One Winter was extremely harsh so the Indians decided to loan the white men a bunch of animals including rabbits. Well the white men accepted the gift and began to use the rabbits for a source of meat. Well anyway it was a very long winter however the white men made it through alive. They still however had quite a few animals left over which they began using during the Spring even though they didn’t need them.

Soon the Indians came back and started taking the rabbits and the rest of the livestock back thinking it was just a loan. The white men however became offended that the Indians were taking back the “gifts”, so from then on the term Indian giver was used to refer to someone who took something back that they already had given someone.

I admit I substituted the original blankets that the Indians gave for rabbits to make this story more relevant. 🙂
