Breed Information

The Palomino rabbit is a medium-sized breed known for its golden fur. This unique and eye-catching breed originated in the 1980s and has become increasingly popular as a pet and show rabbit over the past few decades.

Origins

The Palomino rabbit breed was developed in the 1980s by Monna Berryhill, a rabbit breeder in Washington state. She crossed American rabbits with Argente Brun rabbits which produced offspring with a distinct golden coat. After selectively breeding the golden-coated offspring for several generations, the uniform Palomino breed was established. The name "Palomino" was chosen due to the resemblance of the rabbit's golden fur to the coat of a Palomino horse.

The Palomino breed was first recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) in 1998 and became officially accepted as a recognized breed in 2002. While the Palomino originated in the United States, it has since grown in popularity internationally as well. Today, Palomino rabbits can be found in the pet trade and rabbit shows all over the world.

Appearance

The most distinctive feature of the Palomino rabbit is its rich golden-yellow fur. The ideal coat color is described by ARBA as a "deep golden, uniform topcoat carrying down as far as possible". The underside and belly fur is a creamy white or light gray. The fur on the Palomino is short, soft and velvety to the touch.

In addition to the coat, the eyes are brown with a golden tint that complements the fur. The ears are medium in length, well-furred and carried erect. The body type is compact and medium-sized, ideally weighing between 7-10 lbs. The head is rounded with a gentle curve to the forehead. Overall, the Palomino presents a very uniform and proportional appearance.

Personality

The Palomino is known for having a gentle, friendly personality. They tend to be curious, playful and energetic. As prey animals, they can be skittish at times but respond well to patient and gentle handling. Once trust is established, Palominos often enjoy human interaction and make charming pets.

Like other rabbits, Palominos are social animals and ideally should be paired with another friendly rabbit companion. They communicate through body language and will let you know when they are happy and ready to play or be petted. Providing toys for mental stimulation and plenty of space to hop and play is important for keeping a Palomino rabbit content.

While sabler than some other breeds, Palominos are considered an active breed. So having ample room for them to explore and play is ideal for their natural energy level. Their golden fur does require regular grooming to stay looking its best. So Palominos are not necessarily the lowest maintenance rabbit breed, but their beauty and friendly nature makes the extra care worthwhile for many owners.

Housing

Proper housing is essential for any rabbit, and Palominos have some specific requirements. As a medium-sized breed, they need plenty of room to hop and play. The recommended minimum enclosure size for a Palomino pair is at least 8 square feet. The cage should have wire flooring to prevent foot sores along with an absorbent litter tray.

Palominos can be prone to heat stress, so keeping their environment cool during hot weather is important. Providing frozen water bottles or tiles for them to lay against can help prevent overheating. Placing their housing in the coolest area of your home and avoiding direct sunlight exposure will also keep your Palomino comfy.

In addition to a secure cage, providing supervised playtime in a rabbit-proofed area is recommended. Palominos love to run, jump and explore when given the chance. Rabbit-safe toys will further enrich their playtime and prevent boredom.

Grooming and Health

The velvety fur of the Palomino requires regular brushing to prevent matting and keep the coat looking its best. Gently using a soft brush or comb over the body weekly will remove loose hair and distribute skin oils.

Nails should be checked monthly and trimmed as needed. Teeth also need monitoring to ensure they are wearing down properly from chewing. Having an exotics veterinarian examine your Palomino's teeth yearly is recommended.

Palominos have an average lifespan of 7-10 years when cared for properly. Choosing pellets, hay and vegetables specifically formulated for rabbits supports their nutritional needs. Annual vet checkups allow for early detection of common issues like dental disease and skin infections.

Reproduction and Lifespan

Female Palominos sexually mature around 4-6 months of age and can have close to 6 litters per year. Males become sexually mature at 3-4 months. Litters range from 4-12 babies, with 6 being the average. The gestation period is around 28-35 days.

Palomino rabbits generally live between 7-10 years. With proper diet, housing and regular vet care they can potentially reach the upper end of that range. There is currently limited data on the genetic health of the breed since they are still relatively new. But there have not been widespread reports of inheritable diseases observed so far.

Like all rabbits, Palominos require selection of responsible breeders who focus on health and temperament. Ensuring parent stock is screened for common rabbit illnesses can give baby Palominos the best start in life. Monitoring for signs of aggression or anxiety and avoiding using those rabbits for breeding purposes also maintains good temperament. Following this selective breeding practice allows the positive traits of the Palomino breed to continue strengthening.

Showing Palominos

For rabbit enthusiasts interested in showing, the Palomino is a wonderful breed choice. Their striking gold coats catch the judge's eye in the show ring. They also have an ideal medium size body type that adheres to ARBA show standards.

Palominos should be posed with their weight distributed equally on all four feet to showcase the ideal body shape. Keeping the coat well-groomed, clean and mat-free brings out the luxurious sheen. Handling during judging should be gentle yet firm to show confidence.

Personality also comes into play during handling and judging. Judges often look for a calm and curious temperament that allows thorough examination without resistance. So breeding for an easygoing personality produces better show rabbits.

The Palomino breed competes within the "Golden" group classification. Common faults that judges look for are white spotting on fur, gray shading, excess weight causing a "roll" over the hips, and overly large ears. Adhering closely to the ideal coat, body shape and type will earn top marks.

While show rabbits require more intensive grooming and training for competition, owners often feel the bonding experience is extremely rewarding. And breeding show-quality specimens supports preserving the ideal traits of the Palomino breed.

Palomino Rabbits as Pets

The gorgeous golden coat and engaging personality of the Palomino rabbit has contributed to this breed's popularity as a pet. They offer the interactive qualities of a dog or cat while requiring less space than a traditional house pet.

Palominos often eagerly approach their owners looking for playtime and petting. Fetching toys or playing chase around the house provides fun exercise. Puzzle toys and treat balls also stimulate a Palomino's natural foraging instinct.

Despite their friendly nature, handling needs to be gentle, especially with unaccustomed guests. A stressed rabbit may scratch or bite out of fear. Teaching children proper care and interaction in advance prevents negative experiences that erode trust.

Along with lots of playtime, a Palomino pet needs space for an exercise pen or cage, food pellets, hay and fresh greens. Litter training is normally a straightforward process. And the minimal grooming required for a pet helps keep loose fur under control.

The sweet, playful personality of the Palomino rabbit has made it a cherished house pet. Their striking golden coats and curious nature provide hours of delightful companionship and entertainment. For many rabbit enthusiasts, the Palomino breed is the ideal combination of beauty, brains and charm.
